Some days, the most human thing you can do is open your laptop near other humans.
Not talk to them. Not even make eye contact for long. Just exist nearby. You, your coffee, your deadlines, and that feeling of knowing that other people are doing the same thing.
It’s a strange kind of companionship, this quiet togetherness. The high school teacher updating next term’s syllabus. The programmer typing in bursts like he’s sprinting toward some invisible finish line. The design student rearranging the same three rectangles on her screen. The café’s air is caffeinated and collective, a mix of espresso and shared ambition.
You start to realize: the energy of a place isn’t in its Wi-Fi speed or the latte art. It’s in the subtle exchange happening across tables. Accidentally synchronized sighs, typing, deep breaths, and small victories. You’re not friends, not really, but when someone finally packs up after hours of work, you feel weirdly proud of them. Like, Good job, stranger. We did it.
There’s something profoundly comforting about being alone together. It reminds you that effort is universal, that somewhere between your third cup of coffee and their tenth tab on Chrome, we’re all just trying to make something of ourselves.
Maybe that’s what connection looks like now: proximity, productivity, and a shared playlist.
And when you finally close your laptop, your day feels a little fuller. Not because you finished everything, you probably didn’t, but because you didn’t have to do it entirely alone.
